It was great to meet you too!

We were taping for a half hour program on the Festival of Moving Media that will air on Rogers TV as part of a series of programs on Guelph's Fab 5 Festivals. It probably won't air until sometime in February or March I'm guessing. The Contemporary Dance Festival program is airing now and Hillside is nearly done. Then I have to get editing the Jazz Festival, Eden Mills Writers' Festival and the Festival of Moving Media. Lots to do!

You're the Papermaker!

Kim Logue is a mostly self-taught multi-media artist who works in hand made papers using recycled and natural materials.

Her arts and crafts have been for sale and shown at venues from The Clemency Heritage Museum and Colour Outside the Lines gallery in Arizona to consignment gift shops and in house holiday craft shows around Ontario. She has taught workshops for public school classrooms, homeschool groups and under Hillside Festival workshop tents. She offers private sessions in her own studio, and will set up in a variety of participant-requested locations.

She produces customized paper by request and also offers customized art and craft parties for any and all celebrations, including adult events!

Hidden Histories, Secret Places

The roots of the roomie/landlord/tenant relationship go deeper than may appear to the public eye. Sometimes unnoticed in plain sight are breeches of laws, promises and even simple courtesy. Do you have experiences or observations to recount?

The secret place through which these stories will be explored is the makeshift travelling papermaking station, Kim Logue, first time film-maker (and long-standing, fair-weather papermaker), sets up everywhere she lives...

"I have had disappointing experiences with all four rental units I have had during my Guelph tenure. I'd guess that the landlords were displeased as well." Logue states, and then asks landlords especially to come forward for the taping.

Are you a landlord that had paid the price for some tenants? Have you had challenging situations as an apartment renter in town? Logue welcomes your story for the first filming, scheduled for Saturday July 30, from noon to three. "I know there are at least two sides to every story, so I want to invite yours!"

I have had one landlord who seemed to specifically resent my papermaking activity and made accusations about intentionally messed up tours to real estate agents... this landlord made a huge mid day threat of throwing out all the neatly-placed-already-relocated-at-landlord-request equipment if it wasn't moved and stored as per her latest dictated instructions within the next two hours.

When I was originally negotiating with my landlords-at-time-of-this-pitch, they had promised not just space to plant things, and sit out side but also an area to set up my papermaking studio... Will this be true? Will it be use-able? Will I be paid as a papermaking teacher? Will I create sale-able sheets of recycled journals and junkmail? What will be revealed in this documentary, if selected, is not just how to make paper, including a variety of processes and ingredients, but some of the secrets of sharing spaces, several tenancies in particular, and maybe even what's in bloom in the gardens around the outdoor studio...

I feel at home in Guelph. It is my hometown, to me. It is a good agricultural CANADIAN kind of university city, that I came to instead of being born in or grown up in.

I first felt at home like this in a funktified lil american town called Jerome, Az.
(that's where this whole blog gots its name).

Workshop Submission/Site Proposal:

A proposed open studio for papermaking, where pulp of used junk paper may be transformed into beautiful new sheets, with added pizzazz from natural touches like flower petals and leaves. Imagine a picnic table sized papermaking station set up inside the Lake Stage area or Island Stage area -- along the back, beside the food vendors and kids activities that were new last year, or maybe near the latern station? (From past years I have found too much set up/tear down time to be suited to a repeated one hour workshop, so propose it as a longer standing workshop and/or even open studio option for this year)...

Equipment and Supplies:
I can provide all the materials to set up the Paper Making Station, with instructions that are self-explanatory for sheet making. I would be delighted to be available to demo and/oversee participants traffic/hands-on actual papermaking for several hours each day. I am also happy to provide take home handouts instructions on how to make your own mold and deckle, or use other methods for the screening process.

Presenter also provides: Premade pulp and all kits and materials (vat, jugs, mold and deckle sets , couching towels, sheets to support each newly formed page), and recyclable junk papers in different colours for different pulps.

Horse Tales! Horse Talk for All Ages
Has Hillside brought a real horse onto the island, or, just the next best thing? Experts and enthusiasts from 6-60+ are invited to bring their best horse story or horsey question!This horse talk covers: 1) The Grooming Kit- a show and tell about why + how to groom a horse as well as proper riding attire 2) Hoofbeats – an interactive activity where attendees use percussion instruments to play the rhythms of horse paces. Kim Logue is a rider/trainer, certified instructor, and equine journalist who loves to share her love of horses.

About the Workshop:
This workshop will include physical activity, audience participation, listening and discussion. There is no need to limit # of participants and the complexity of the presentation will be geared to age and experience level of those that attend. There will also be some print material/handouts available.

Bio:
Kim Logue is a certified instructor and life long horse enthusiast. In Feb 2009 she received Equine Canada’s Media of the Year award for founding the CFRU show hoofbeats! radio. She coaches a show team at Greyden Farms Equestrian Centre in Hillsburg and also teaches out of Manoravon Farms in Guelph. She has presented papermaking workshops at Hillsides past and brought a real live pony to the Children’s Tent to help celebrate Hillside's 25th anniversary.

Rise Up Singing - Workshop Review

I whipped out the digital recorder when they said we were gonna do Amazing Grace different keys so everyone could find out which was most comfortable for them... Since I had a bit of the allergy/cold going on, my range was funny and I wanted to be able to find out again later which key was most comfortable for me normally...
turns out the recording mostly got Jessie Bell sounding lovely in each key, because that's who I was sitting beside, ha.

We also had to sing something all together and turn to a buddy and say what came up for us. My talented seat neighbour said she choked up sometimes, especially singing with that many people. Which had actually happened just then to me, but without this dicussion exercise I wouldn't have quite been aware enough of that to articulate it. It was nice to have someone to confide in how sometimes just singing by myself could get me sobbing. It comes from such an emotional place!

After I spotted at the tense, totally clenched man leaning in to the tent and listening to every thing SOOOO intently, but not opening his mouth to participate, I started crying. I used to be him, I was thinking and started weeping about the agony of that repression. At first I just ignored the tears, thinking "they're clear. no one will see. no one's facing here anyway." etc. but they streamed and streamed. I couldn't stop them, and my voice got lost anyway in all the choking up and I REALLY needed a kleenix so I left the singing workshop...

but I would really like to work with Jane Lewis and take some of her workshops and choirs:
i.e.
Experience the joy and power of singing together as we gather for eight weeks and make music with our voices. We'll work on songs by female artists, learning melodies and harmony parts. Our final week will be a public performance, which we will develop together over the course of the workshop. No audition is required, only a love of singing and a willingness to practice in between our weekly meetings. There will be opportunities to sing solo for those who are interested.

one year it took me til the end of November to do my hillside laundry. so it was a long time until i was impressed with the kooky shapes the volunteer cutter made the couching sheets!

Hillside Highlights

I missed a lot of people I was hoping to see there, and I thought some magic was missing in many of the music workshops... it was different this year.
but
1) i loved the food in the beer tents
2) i loved davey c's song about doing the laundry and talking to ya if ya feel lonely and the whole "i can't believe you're actually here feeling"
3) i loved every thing tannis did in every tent all day every day. the highlight of the entire festival was the gospel hour-and-a-half. her number allowed us to tell jesus what we want and Eliza also almost brought me to tears with her song of thanks "thanks for my tears and thanks for the sorrow that made me" etc.

i also love my bookstore friends tremendously. and, talk about your land-family!

Open Studio Pitch

I would like to have open studios days. Weather permitting, this can be done outside. I also think it would be possible to supervise the papermakers AND run the store, so I am not suggesting additional staff. There is no need to register participants or charge for workshop attendance, it can be a "community initiative" offerred to clients and to attract interest and traffic to the shop.

Equipment and Supplies:
I will set up the Paper Making Station, with instructions, in case the store is busy and I can't be in both places at once. If it is quiet in the store, then I will do MORE demo and more actual papermaking. I can also provide instructions on how to make your own mold and deckle, or use other methods for the screening process.

Presenter provides:
Blenders as feasible, and/or premade pulp and all kits and materials (vat, jugs, mold and deckle sets , couching towels, sheets to support each newly formed page), and recyclable junk papers in different colours for different pulps.

Water Watching

i sent my letter in, and reminded lots of people to send theirs... the example one reads:

i am opposed to the renewal of this Permit To Take Water because:

1) It would further deplete the watershed and cause the water table to fall, dry up wetlands and result in the loss of habitats. This water taking must be stopped to safeguard this aquifer and to avoid further environmental damage.

2) It risks a tragedy where surface water contaminates groundwater/drinking water (as detailed in Harden Environmental’s letter on June 1, 2005 to you; as in Walkerton).

3) The water that Nestle removes for bottling and export compromises the future supply for the City of Guelph and area, and drinking water supply for municipalities must take precedence over water taking by commercial bottlers.

4) It would create countless plastic bottles that would needlessly end up in the waste stream, as a non-compostable toxic mess .

I want my government to demonstrate leadership and commitment to its own policies and principles by denying this permit.

Want to canter? Try a trot? Plan to attend an interesting presentation about horses, where participants will play musical instruments to experience the various paces of a horse or pony! Colours and markings of the horse are also discussed, with supplies provided to decorate horse face masks. As well as her lifelong interest in the world of horses, and role teaching horse back riding lessons, presenter Kim Logue is also an Equine Journalist.

Thank you for extending the workshop deadline!

I am available for 2 one hour workshops Saturday and Sunday, between 11 am and 7 pm, for presentations free of charge to participants in either the Children's Area or General Workshop Tents.

Description:
I am continually amazed how the many kinds of riding, vaulting and driving enrich people's lives by empowering them to overcome fears, try new things, achieve goals and set new ones, and form new understandings... using inspirational animals as facilitators! Young people especially benefit from a responsible role in the care of animals and surroundings, and an active focus on nature.

I propose a just-plain-interesting learning-session where I share some knowledge of horses, and have participants try something new - using musical instruments to understand the different rhythms of gaits of a horse. I would also talk about the colours and markings of the horse, and allow kids to decorate horse face masks with supplies provided.

Agenda/Outline:
1) Gaits of the Horse (including explanation, demos, vocal commands and audience participation, 15 -20 min); Presenter provides shakers and percussion instruments for up to 20, others and clap or stomp etc..

2) Colours and Markings (5-10 min explanation of posters); Presenter provides craft supplies including crayons, pipe-cleaners and 100 cardboard mask cutouts, requiring 2 Hillside banquet tables for crafters to work through out the workshop and for the remaining 30min.

Presenter Biography (see att’d presentations/appearances page):
Kim Logue has done papermaking presentations at Hillside in the past, and has since achieved a CMT designation through the Toastmasters public speaking program. The woman on next was having a nervous fit before starting her show. The guys I watching make radio weren't all that helpful, and I couldn't help her about how to operate the equipment but I offered advice

"I say RELAX."

She didn't seem to appreciate it "Ya? HOW?"

"BREATHE."

There was a pause and then she asked my role there. I replied "Uh... snooper?"

She said "I read people and you are no sidekick. You should have your own show..."

As we were driving away, tuned in to 93.3fm, we heard her say on air "sometimes you have to take the canoe to the big ship. and Guelph is my canoe..."

i finally went, and it was awesome!!!

valentine's day 2005 i ran into ken whitely and his wife at this really out of the way obscure vegetarian restaurant called anapurna. he is the best the dang jug player that ever lived, swear to god. i didn't even know to love a jug player until he invented it for me. and he's really good at all the instruments, its really true. i worked the harbourfront week to see it and hear it for my own self.

Ken Whiteley, 6x Juno nominee and one of Canada's most respected roots musicians/producers, has often hosts gospel workshops at folk festivals, where the interaction of the artists sharing the stage and the uplifting nature of the music has created a special kind of magic...

...i forget if that's when we sang peace in our hearts, peace in our homes, peace everywhere we go, peace peace peace... it felt SO good to do so.

ken whitely wrote the cheerful friday night song for his wife. and someone else mentioned those infuriating couples in love. we sang peace in hearts. peace in homes. peace everywhere you go. peace. peace. peace.

dude who loaned me the tent wanted to share it but i didn't invite him so there was, frankly, a tiny bit of bad energy between us about the unspoken/reciprocal favours that i did not deliver on...

worse (ha), i do not have a pic of my pink hair when i first wake up in the morning (but i wished for such a thing).

i missed so much of what i wanted to see, but i saw a lot that was great too:
from matt mays and sarah harmer on the main stage, to a real close up and intimate workshop with jill barber and kathleen edwards singing songs that were rather heartbreaking on a side stage, to the gospel breakfast with a lot of good singing alonging and so much in between...
i ran into a couple of old friends who i meant to get contact info from and i met a couple new people that i will follow up with to make friends...

in the time slot where i was crew chief, i found myself saying "go for kim" v. frequently, on hillside radio and doesn't that have a nice ring to it? there was no room to be shy, and personally, i think that the festival should make note of the aforesaid suggested broadcast slogan...

music reviews will follow eventually of course. but once again i've found, basically, with hillside, you can't go wrong!

i am already waiting for next year.

1) wait til i tell cath i worked with "a Dead Pete" (both of those boys seemed familar).
2) i am glad i couldn't locate my traditional hillside hat, because my hair smoothed things out with a bus driver
3) the latern ceremony should include a procession OUT of the conservation area.
4) i would enjoy a drum circle more if i drummed, but i think perhaps i am too old to watch fire dancers cirlce that close to the centre...
5) the bike lock up makes a fine place to sing a song or two over water. i am glad to have played guitar on the island for a second, it was the right amount and helped with my energy for the day.

if someone said "we would like you to be more involved with the festival" to me, what would i say?

he BROUGHT his own tent. but from the vibe clearly it was a back up plan. he ended up with someone IN there with him even but still the resentment... perhaps i snored so loud i disturbed them and THAT's the real complaint. whatever, i liked being able to camp out and on sunday night (when mr. loaner was taking it back a day early) i slept in the car for a few hours before making the short drive home. just for tradition i guess...

to top it all off, i have ENVIRONMENTAL issues.

1) even if you believe that recycling is a sham, and will do absolutely nothing toward saving the planet, you should participate. to recycle, AT LEAST, sends the MESSAGE to the government or whatever capatalist powers at be, that you WANT to do the right thing.

2) the truth is i am not (yet) a vegan. but i don't buy meat to cook at home and i order vegetarian in a restaurant as often as possible so my morals are embodied by my spending to this increased degree.

2) driving to networking school today i realized it would have only taken me about 20 minutes, and not thru too scary neighbourhoods, to get to the starlight on saturday night if i coulda actually got out some.

3) $190 and 3 points free? the cop followed me right to my driveway before i noticed him and could thank him PROFUSELY for NOT writing me up.

"aren't they great?!" i reply as they walk their way out, past him behind bar.

1) they should NOT be bagging off me this way.
2) they cost $250 USD a few years ago. that's about 5 to 10 to maybe a kagillion times what i will normally pay for a pair of pants, and it was at a gross time like now when i didn't know where my rent money was coming from. but i'm still glad i did it. they are the best pants EVER

Different Stories is one of my favourite cds borrowed recently from the library. I love the voices of Tannis Slimmon, Sue Smith and Jude Vadala, with the many diverse blends, mixes and song structures along with rather simple instrumentation and slight variances from tune to tune, (including lots of really good mandolin and a surprising guest appearance by Tim Vesley on accordion)?!

The album was produced by the band and Ken Whiteley – recorded in Guelph and then mixed at his Casa Wroxton studio in Toronto. I can’t for the life of me spot a date in the liner notes, but the magic seems timeless to me. Do they still play around???

One of my favourite songs, is Why Can’t You Read My Mind written by Tannis Slimmon/Lewis Melville, and my other big favourite is Falling For You. What does the thanks to Elaine Bird in the credits for putting the owls together mean?

Chances are if you feel like shit, you are being brave. This is a free lesson received at a recent event at Yonge and Bloor, where Sandra Shamas became my new feminist-in-the-flesh inspiration. She said she is 38 years old and knows what she’s about. She likes who she is, and while she would like a life mate, she is only accepting a partner in a relationship who is as good as her, or better.
We received all this insight between the lines of her reading. As she hadn’t planned in advance what she wanted to read, there were lots of moments when she was flipping between one book and the other trying to decide...... but, this showed her additional charm. All of her stand up shows have been published by Mercury Press, and are great to read or hear. But, improvising in person, Sandra Shamas makes you laugh with silly faces and pauses and her own amusement at things. But remember, hilarious honesty is also painful. Like any really good comedy, her humour also breaks your heart, making her impression even more significant.
When I say we, I mean me and the guy sitting beside me at the event, who has since become a friend. Michael runs a charity called Making Faces which is a non-profit organization that helps children with facial differences, through workshops that teach acting skills and improvisational games. Michael combined his experiences as a child of facial difference and as an actor/musician to create the program, and is himself, proof positive that if you dare to follow your dreams they can be realized. Check out makingfaces.ca and the fact that he once worked with Sandra Shamas when she became a puppeteer on the children's television series "Fraggle Rock."

I am happy to say that I spotted her at Hillside 2004 with a new beau, grinning and wearing matching straw cowboy hats!

Wit's End II: Heart's Desire is her latest show and Sandra Shamas fans again look forward to the wonderful release of laughter and tears her performance invariably triggers. Can’t wait to see it!

Description: A Returning Portable Papermaking Studio

The PaperMaking Workshop offers an easy and creative way to transform unwanted paper into wonderful paper art. Fun for ages 3 and up, this craft workshop balances the needs of young and old, beginners as well as experienced artists, and uses natural touches like grass and leaves from the Hillside setting.

There is no need to limit the number of participants! Any number is welcome to watch papermakers at work and view handmade paper art results. Anyone is welcome as well to get their hands in the slurry for hands on experience. Participants can take their creations away with them to dry, or leave with presenter in trade for dry papers from past years.

Proposed as ONE 2-hour workshop/open studio.

A revised format from prior years allows the introduction of more advanced projects and challenges for those participants who return again or for those who would simply like to experiment a little more elaborately, with an experienced artist on hand to help.

the first hour = discussion/demo of:
the basic suggested materials, collection of add-ins, discussion of equipment and supplies, set up of work space, demo and discussion of the basics of the papermaking process.
1) make pulp 2) load vat 3) make sheet 4) drying
demo followed by all other participants making their own...Q&A etc.

the second hour = continuing projects:
1) embedding 2) fusing a patchwork/accordian book 3) shaping/casting 4) imprints 5) paper care and uses, consignment sales etc.

One way to make larger sheets is to make yourself a larger frame. i have seen people doing that with vats and screens almost as big as they themselves are! but that way is not MY favourite way. To make a large sheet with our small frames, I guess I better bring an uncut bedsheet. we can form sheets without using the deckle, and the edges will be soft and thin out considerably. then its a matter of flipping each new sheet overlapping slightly to the previous one, and we can continue building it until it reaches the chosen size. it is better to press these sheets before drying but the book says you can dry it on a line provided that you support the base cloths pins along the legnth of the sheet.

A recipe I have never yet tried (good for desert papermaking)

you need strong sharp scissors to cut the yukka frawns, dried ones. cut to 2 inch pieces, soak for a week to a month (it is a tough fibre to work with), add water, keep a lid on it, soak and rinse before cooking with water and sodium barbonate for 2 hours. (arm and hammer washing soda)drain, strain, save the fibre ditch the stinky water.do not use these same pots and stuff for food after.rinse thru strianer again and again. leave to dry in a ball of gucky stuff and use a hydro pulper instead of your blender. it is really stringy so let it go a couple minutes. you can add some white glue as your chemical sizing and colour retention chemicals. you can tell by the blender sound when it is ready as pulp.

Basic Papermaking - Ingredients and Items Needed

there is an abundance of readily available materials in your homes, schools or offices suitable for my straight forward method of papermaking.

notice the difference in what your finished product looks like as created with different ingredients i.e. laser print letters float around in the water beautifully randomly splashing your new sheets, where as junk paper from ink jet printers is turns all the slurry fibres an even grey. notice the difference in adding your ingredients in different times throughout the process i.e. adding it to sheet on the mold vs. adding it to the vat vs. adding it to the pulp in the blender. never forget the possibility of dyes and FRAGRANCEs.

recommended materials:
computer paper, photocopy paper, watercolour paper, brown bags, wrapping paper
(note on page of 8.5X11 usually makes 1 handmade paper sheet) (soaking should be at least 3 hours, up to a week. if less time is available, soak with HOT water)
bulk up/colour:
newspaper, phone book paper, construction paper, egg cartons
decorative:
magazine bits, stamps, wrapping paper, comics
more add-ins:
confetti, glitter, parsley and other spices, tea leaves, coffee grounds, threads, dryer lint, pencil shavings, flower petals, banana or orange peel...

equipment:

blender

plastic dish pan (12X14 at least 5" deep), but i like a watertight tub with a lid as my vat so you can work day after day with one "batch"

pressing boards, sponge towel, old shoes on your feet for a sloppy wet process etc.

mold and deckle (the essential two part tool for multiple sheet forming). the mold has screening and the deckle frame sits on top to control the thickness and quality of paper. you can try an embrodery hoop for free form circle sheets. some people use nylons streched over coat hangers. ellie's first set were made out of window screen and hand made by her dad. i made several sets staple gunning various silks and webbed materials to wooden picture frames picked up cheap at garage sales. one of my favourite for its nylon screen kits came from new leaf papermill, salt spring island BC 250-537-5335 for $20.

i could sell a kit that includes an illustrated step by step guide for creating cards and other paper artwork. the note paper cards folded in half fit a standard A2 envelope.

Basic Papermaking - Drying

Last year we placed the damp felts, with the wet handmade paper sheets still on them, in a fairly flat, sunny place to dry. In good weather like we had that day it only takes a couple hours. At home you can place the pressed damp sheets between dry fabric and iron dry, being sure the temperature is set very low.

Some of our hillside papermakers had to dry the sheets by placing between the pages of the telephone book so they could travel with them still wet. I sometimes use other blotting material and placing a weight on a stack of handmade paper sheets, between two board or using two clamps (change the blotters for dry ones several times in either of these press methods).

Handmade paper sheets can also be air dried, by brushing them gently onto boards, plastic laminate or glass. One other alternative is to hang them to dry with clothes pegs and a line. I have been known to put them on oven racks on low til dry. Again, each method has an impact on the final product. I usually mean to write down on a sample sheet what exactly I did with that batch, but I haven't really done a good job of THAT, I must admit...

Step 3
Place the deckle over the mold, next to the mesh in the anti-basket fashion. Meaning, hold the mold screen side up and then place deckle on top.

Hold them together firmly and thoroughly immerse them vertically into the vat, at one side.
In a smooth and continuous motion pull the frame through the vat to the other side, and then lift.

The suction can be quite strong and the and the pulp is still fairly runny so keep it horizontal and keep it steady. As the water drains, I recommend a small shake from side to side and front and back so as to help the fibres to fuse rather than lying in the same direction. More advanced papermakers often use this "drain time" to decorate the sheet as it forms with add ins or watercolours etc etc etc. I usually remove the deckle slowly and set it to the side, tipping the mold slightly to let more excess water to drain.

remember to stir the slurry in the vat before forming each sheet to ensure an even distribution of fibres.

Before you form a sheet make sure you have a pressing area ready for couching (the transfer of the wet layer of pulp from the mold to a felt or foam). At Hillside in recent years we have used old bed sheets and cotton curtains cut to squares, with towels underneath to absorb the extra water. Some people use a stack of old newspapers and denim rectangles, other people use a damp j-cloth over a formica board. There are many options, and they will each make a difference to the final product. Experiment!

Basic Papermaking - Prepare Pulp

Step 1.

Prepare Pulp:
Having collected some suitable materials, tear them into one inch square bits and soak. Fill blender with water not more than 2/3 full, adding a small handful of presoaked material, and in short bursts blend until the bits become a smooth even slurry.

The dishpan/vat can now be loaded with the prepared pulp at about one part pulp to three parts water (this is the ratio that determines the thickness of the sheets).

Presenter provides: Blenders as feasible, and/or premade pulp and all kits and materials (vat, jugs, mold and deckle sets , couching towels, sheets to support each newly formed page), and recyclable junk papers in different colours for different pulps.

Description:

The Reuse/Recycle PaperMaking Workshop offers a creative way to transform unwanted, unneeded items into useful and wonderful art. Fun for ages 3 and up, we can balance the needs of young and old, beginners as well as experienced artists.

There is no need to limit the number of participants. All are welcome to watch the papermakers at work and view a display of handmade paper art.
Proposed as two one hour workshops to include the discussion/demo of the papermaking process, pulp made from used office paper is to be transformed into beautiful new paper, with added pizzazz from natural touches like flower petals and leaves, abundantly available in the Hillside setting.
Different stations will be set up and demo volunteers will help lead through the basics: preparation of pulp, couching, and pressing, which will be followed by each workshop attendee getting an opportunity for hands on experience of sheet formation and artistic techniques such as embedding and shaping– perhaps making several sheets, depending on the workshop turnout.
Participants take away samples.

one thing i know for sure about Tuners

is that i cannot afford to replace a tuner after every trip to hillside!

especially since i like the expensive ones the best...
next year, since i've vowed i'll be camping out anyway, i will not even bring a TUNER, but will instead just ask some super talent nearby to fix the machine for me, should i feel the thing requires such attention...

on sunday morning, i was so frustrated with the sound of my guitar and the fact that i cannot find either the intellitouch or the electric tuner that works, in my heap of belongings in the basement in bolton, i drove to acoustic traditions in orangeville, to beg them to loan me one til the construction is over and i can officially unpack.

but, they were closed. so, i had the rockstar audacity to drive around the corner to a shop manager's residence to ask if he could open the store, to loan me a tuner. but alas, the dude had a girl over and i just didn't think it was appropriate for the ex-wife to be rapping at the door at the crack of dawn asking such favours, so i just headed to the family picnic with the guitar as it was...

LAST year, faced with a similarly frustrating predicament, i called an imaginary friend, a handsome rockstar in the toronto neighbourhood i was living in, for assistance. but that didn't work out either. although i did finally make friends with the guitar guys in l&m all about it...

suffice to say that this habit has GOT to stop. either i will learn to do it by ear, or i will use it as an excuse to break out my geetar, in public, on such sacred ground...

i shalt not buy another *&^%ing tuner.

i did my first ever papermaking workshop, and i got my guitar back, all springy and set up like. it was irresistable, i am telling you.

i watched jessy bell smith sing and play christmas in prison, on her electric guitar, bossing players, as in the musicians supporting thru her the piece, with dance. (just like mik jagger for the sax solo). i loved it. then i went to lindsay's aunt's, and had the chance to play on a borrowed electric guitar, my very first time touching a guitar on a chord. experimenting no less with an 11 yr old obsessive who was happy to twiddle and explain each every knob on his brother's fender and amp, as well as (eventually) letting me try out his red gibson... it just rang so much!!! and, i cannot wait to do kooky shit.

...meanwhile, my note to my handsome crush got the read aloud from nancy pants. next time she offers me any kind of mannequin parts i am saying yes. will i see her this year?

last time i say my jeromian artist necklace maker friend, she asked about part of the necklace i was wearing. she recognized the new zealand bone carving i had as a gift from a travelling landfamily, but about the metal bit added on i said

"its a beer cap from the Other Place my People are. i did a papermaking workshop there and on the second day about 35 people came and i couldn't even work the blender."

christmas in prison

did i already tell you how i watched jessie bell smith INSTRUCT her fellow musicians about the song first with alot of G to C reciting and then during it with DANCE? nifty. was that my first hillside? no just my first ELECTRIC fried hillside. she made/makes good inspiration... i remember it very clearly, she sang christmas in prison.

and i do now too. when my dad visited to check out the spinster pad the first time a few months ago, i made him put on the headphones to listen to my version of that very jessie inspired song, that i had just laid down, to audacity man. and then, duh! i deleted it instead of closing the file...

i just remembered the time that i was playing it and kim and mike stopped bickering from different parts of their house, it felt like to listen to me in the garden. at the end he said "so, what are you gonna do next with your music kim?"

Happy (PaperMaking) Accidents

1) it was sis that gave me the papermaking kit one year for christmas. and i never even opened the box for years, which bugged her. every once in a while she'd ask me about it until one day in the sun i finally opened it and kablam, i went on a craze that STILL comes over me every now and then.

2) it was by tripping, on my way out the to vat in the outdoor arizona studio (with the slurry in the blender from the kitchen), that i learned an important facet of papermaking. when the pulp hit the garden i thought i cannot deal with THAT and went to work early instead of late. when i came home from the gallery to grab lunch, i saw that the big messy glop had hardened into a little paper cone. a mega phone with which i immediately started announcing around town "hey! you can make shapes with this stuff!" and everything in the kitchen became a big old papermaking supply.

3) in fact, that was an accidental JOB?trying to rep my own mississippi cotton paper into a gallery in jerome, arizona., i had to make an appt with the owner to come back with my show and tell on another day. when i showed up for our follow up, carol said "do you need a job?""no. WHY?""because i am going to costa rica for 3 months and i need someone to babysit my shop."i had rented an apartment 10 steps away from this gallery, where there was loreena mckennit on the sound system and windows to the magnificent red rock sedona valley view and beautiful art work all around, half of it done by friends and people i LOVED and i was glad to find a way to make it work...

Hillside Festival falls in the category of music festivals, but is much more!

Hillside is a 3 day, 5 stage community-based celebration of music, dance, drumming and the spoken word, that also hosts artistic, holistic and environmental workshops and demonstrations, and strives to be accessible, in the beautiful Guelph Lake Conservation Area.

Acoustic Guitar Magazine ranked Hillside as one of the top 25 festivals of North America (despite one of the smallest budgets in the business), and Hillside was labeled a reason Guelph is one of the “Top ten places to live in Canada.”

It’s like attending a huge family reunion and finding a few thousand long-lost cousins have decided to show up, so you open the door wider to make sure everyone has a place to sit. My First Hillside

As always, amid coolers, tents, lawn chairs, blankets and drum circles, Hillside offers cheap, veggie food and a relaxed and respectful attitude towards audience behaviour and thereby fosters a uniquely communal and genteel vibe. The festival also boasts an eclectic line-up from celebrated singer songwriters and hip-hop heavyweights, to spoken word and art-rock elite.

“Now, are you gonna remember me?” I said to Nik (of Jughead) falling in step with him, after not seeing him for about a decade “or am I in for a little of the rock star treatment?” “You loaned me your car the first day I met you Kim,” he grinned back at me. “Not only will I remember you, I’m indebted to you for life.”

He gave me my first guitar lesson, when he told me I needed to go home, SIT DOWN, and figure out what was so “inefficient in my method.” Joel gifted me his latest release “The Buddagrass Family Unit” as a birthday present, while Sarah Harmer played, wearing his girlfriend Eleanor’s sweater for warmth.

And you know what? While I was sitting there on soft green Ontario green grass, overlooking water, breathing clean air and listening to the fiddle and the banjo, I decided I am celebrating my birthday that exact way, in that exact conservation area, every year for the rest of my life. It’s a place I am connected to. I will always have people there. Those are my people there.

a hillside hat

i got mine, several years ago at the one of a kind show. i have a loose tradition with my mom to trek it to that crafts sale at least once a year. this particular time, i said to her "i'll be back in a second" and took off following a guy that was wearing a really cool hat. a girl's hat? i thought i'd ask him where he got it. he was walking fast and as i hurried and stalked him i noticed he was cute and wondered if it was his girlfriend's hat and if i would be asking HER where she got it and then lo and behold, we came upon a hats for sale booth. his girlfriend, apparently, is a hat maker. she was wearing one too!

when my mom and i shopped that aisle, i bought one. orange floppy, with blue and green and burgundy. she thought it was ridiculous (the hat in itself and in that we were shopping for christmas presents for other people not blowing an entire budget on a foolish lid for ones ownself), and tried to talk me out of it, but i would not have it. some how, i just HAD to have it.

and, for years, it never really got a lot of action afterwards. it went once to a ren fest in milton with my wee georgian friends, once to a tea party in arizona where the queen came...

not too long after that i learned what hillside was, and started going.

and, started wearing JUST the right hat!

last summer a woman said to me that she had seen a nice smiley gentleman in hat just like mine! had i seen him?

"uh no, but i'd really like to" (is he handsome) etc. she said "maybe you're destined to meet him." grinning from ear to ear and wagging her eyebrows at me.

and i have since decided that i am allowed to enjoy that idea, that synchronisity. and i have decided i am also allowed to enjoy the surmised synchronisity of the delightful davey c and michael johnston requesting audience participation via body percussion for a new song, and about dancing and waiting another year.

they had a tea party in in the east street garden to celebrate my arrival. my best friend was as big as a house and i wore my best hat, and the queen came! (there was framed pic of her on one of the tables, swear to god). it was nice to see so many friends and i remember how a former landlord man, and husband of my artist friend 30 years his junior, generously welcomed me "well, you haven't changed at all!" shaking his head "You are still the same smiling cheerful sunny girl you were when you left. you are! you are just as bright as the sunshine you keep mentioning here" and he gestured out over the glowing valley.

karen told a great story about working in the garden, while mark lounged on the patio describing to her what the hummingbirds were doing. one was building his little nest, with cobwebs and twigs and stuff, and the other guy in the next door nest would undo the first bird's handiwork,s tuffing his nest with the materials and it went back and forth like that all afternoon.

roberto he pointed out the rocks in the retaining wall we were sitting against were from the old hotel (that burned down in 1915), as dan the prospector leaned over the fence and put $5 on May 14, and brother mikey plotted a baby pool turned college fund, and then used the pooper scooper from the birth kit to try and catch the carpenter bees... which were drilling holes in the wood of the house. they don't sting those bees, but they are big. roberto said when he was a kid, they used to catch 'em tie strings to 'em and walk 'em around town.what a place! i was there that time on an open ticket too. i sure doooooooooo wanna go on a papermaking craze there sooooooooooooooooooooooon! want to come?
